Frequently Asked Questions about PbyP
What are the most frequent problems?
- Teachers worry that if children determine the content, act as mentors and do the assessment, where is their role? In reality the skill of the teacher is in supporting, inspiring and challenging learners. In all the projects, teachers have realised that this scheme further enhances their role and makes them more needed than ever.
- Learners are not use to this approach and need easing in to the role in the same way teachers do. Allowing failure and managing risk are two skills the leader of the scheme needs, especially in the early stages.
- In the framework document it describes 'Hart's Ladder' this explains how hard it is to change the relationship between teachers and students so that students genuinely feel empowered and trusted. At the start of the scheme it is much better to choose members of staff who already possess these skills.
