A selection of free opportunities and resources we have seen available this month.
Research Bites are a series of short powerpoints about key issues in teaching and learning to use as a stimulus to discussion at staff training sessions . The presentations have been made by Teachers TV and are free to use. Each powerpoint is based on a specific piece of research and all references are given for further reading.View the website here.
The Saatchi Gallery is running a competition for young people across the world to enter their art into their online gallery where site visitors vote for their favourite pieces. There are big money prizes and high profile publicity for the young artist and their school. You can view all current entries on the website and submit your own if you are under 18.
Who do we think we are ? is an educational website and programme of events and resources to engage young people and their teachers in exploring the themes of identity, diversity and citizenship at a personal, local, national and international level. The dedicated week is designed to provide a focus for schools , teachers and learners to feel they are part of a national event considering these themes. Nominate someone for Primary Language Teacher of the Year 2009. Nominations can be accepted from a pupil, parent, colleague or friend. The award funded by Scholastic UK and La Jolie Ronde is open to all full or part-time teachers, freelance or independent language teachers or any MFL coordinator who holds a teaching qualification working with children aged between 3-11. The prize is an amazing all expenses paid two-day trip to France for up to 30 children and five teachers as well as resources and free magazine subscriptions for learners and teachers. The 21st Century Learning Alliance has launched a teacher Fellowship scheme. The Fellowships will be awarded to teachers who wish to set up a development or research project in their school related to one of the Alliance’s 4 areas of focus :
Teaching, Learning, Assessment and the curriculum
People and resources
Time (the school day and beyond)
Space (buildings and learning environments)
Applications for a joint project with a colleague are welcome too. A Fellowship grant of £5,000 will be paid in installments to the teacher’s school, with a £1,000 payment to the Fellow on completion of the project. Fellows will meet to present their findings to each other in 2010.

My Money Week is a new and timely initiative designed to support goodpersonal finance education forchildren and young people in the UK.27th June to 5th July will be the first My Money Week with free resources and events for both Primary and Secondary schools. There will also be an interactive website launched during the week. Free toolkits are available for all Primary and Secondary schools in the Uk. The week is managed by The Personal Finance Education Group, funded by the DSCF. Click here to visit the website.
