Our usual round up of learner voice and consultation opportunities and free resources for teachers and learners.
The DCSF has launched a programme providing funding for schools to take pupils to France. Accessed through The Global Gateway website there is funding available for a range of trips for pupils of all ages. Schools do need to have a link with a school in France to apply for funding. Schools who do not have an established link school in France can register for one on the site too. International Education Week takes place from 17-21 November. Ideas, resources and activities are available from the website with the emphasis on using the week to launch any international activity planned for the year. 11Million Takeover Day is devised by the The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England, Sir Al Aynsley-Green to provide a focus for promoting learner voice in schools. The day is designed to allow schools and organisations to give children the opportunity to “take-over” roles and decision making for the day, working alongside the adults who usually have those roles. 11Million Takeover Day takes place on Friday 7th November.

The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) will conduct a survey of children in 40 countries to investigate young people’s awareness and views on the role of the citizen in society. It will be run in the UK by the NFER on behalf of the DCSF and they are currently looking for schools keen to take part. The survey will be on Year nine pupils to take place in Spring 2009. Futurelab regularly run consultations to gather information on their chosen key areas of focus. Currently they are asking for contributions on how schools are using technology to deliver inclusive education especially in meeting Every Child Matters, Learner Voice and Extended Schools requirements. Free Solar Panels for 100 schools are available from The Cooperative Society . The Co-op Society have an established Green Scheme for schools funding green energy initiatives for schools and their commitment continues this year with a scheme to provide a further 100 schools with free solar energy system worth £20,000. The scheme is jointly funded by the UK government’s Low Carbon Buildings Programme and in partnership with the energy company Solarcentury.

Schools Radio Network is UK government funded scheme designed to give learners the space and resources to create their own audio programmes with learners from other schools in the UK. There is dedicated networking site to put learners in touch with those who want to make programmes on similar topics or in a similar way. It is free for any school in the UK to register before 28 November. Sony has supported the scheme with a special award for School Radio with £750 of radio equipment to be won.
